Best of Vintage is as the name suggests, the very best (red) wine from the vintage, which gets to spend extra time in the best oak barrels. The process begins when Joch tastes every barrel of current red wine when it is time to start bottling them all. Every barrel is tasted and assessed. Any outstanding barrels are set aside for Best of Vintage.

2023 sees the emergence of Malbec into the Best of Vintage frame. Malbec is a lesser-known variety in our region (and in Bordeaux where it comes from). It's a super blending wine, bringing deep colour and tannins to the mix.

This BOV has a deep colour, showing dark and red fruits on the nose, with a whiff of violets. It has a medium-full body and great length and delicious tannins. There’s more than a hint of red, blue and black fruits on the palate. A wine with great depth and intensity.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Best of Vintage is a big dark, brooding wine, with considerable balance and structure and complexity, too. It has a powerful savoury edge, but at the same time has a fresh nose of forest berries, violets, anise, a whiff of regionally characteristic chocolate and a slight saline character too. You can cellar Best of Vintage or drink now after decanting. A wine with great depth and intensity, with terrific length. Vegan Friendly
Vintage
Vineyard Notes
We had a very wet winter (between June and September) and a cool wet spring, which made for trying times in the vineyards. As a result of these conditions, vintage started later than in previous years (we picked Chardonnay on the 15th February in #v2023) and we had much smaller volumes than in 2022 or 2021. We had a few warm days in January and February and picked the whites quite quickly, then about 10mm of rain in early March which settled the dust and stopped picking for a little while. Despite the smaller vintage, the quality of grapes was excellent across both red and white varieties.
Winemaking
Winemaker Notes
Best of Vintage is a barrel selection, from Joch and Scott’s favourite barrels from McLaren Vale’s 2023 vintage. The final wine is 60% Shiraz and 40% Malbec (from the old Winery block vines). Malbec is a super blending wine, bringing deep colour and tannins to the mix. Each parcel of grapes is open fermented on their skins in small 2 tonne vessels, are pumped over twice daily (to extract colour flavour and tannin from the grapes and skins) and finish ferment in fine oak barrels (French oak generally). Maturation continues in barrel. Best of Vintage spent about 18 months maturing in oak prior to bottling.
