Battle of Bosworth Wines

About Us

Battle of Bosworth and Spring Seed Wine Co McLaren Vale

Battle of Bosworth make organically grown wines from our family vineyards located near Willunga in the premium wine growing region of McLaren Vale, South Australia. Battle of Bosworth was established in 2001 by Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith on vineyards planted by Joch’s parents in the 1970’s.

The wines take their name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Battle of Bosworth make wines with flavour, texture, purity and balance, that best express the unique characteristics of their McLaren Vale foothills site.

We also make the Spring Seed Wine Co range of wines, which as with the Bosworth wines, are made using organically grown grapes from our McLaren Vale vineyards. Joch likes to call it our parallel label.

Springs Road Wines Kangaroo Island

Because we weren’t busy enough, in 2016 Joch purchased an established vineyard in the Cygnet River area of Kangaroo Island.  Joch had taken our Battle of Bosworth winery crew on a magical mystery tour at the end of vintage 2016. They drove their cars in single file behind Joch in his ute from the vineyards on Gaffney Road to the Aldinga airfield ten minutes away, and from there flew to Kangaroo Island Airport.

They stayed in Emu Bay and had a heap of fun; went fishing, drank wine and beer and played Cards Against Humanity. There were midnight races down to the jetty. No-one got badly injured. During the weekend, Joch went shopping for some groceries in Kingscote and found himself outside the local real estate office and saw the Springs Road vineyards up for sale.

We visited the vineyard a few weeks later and saw immediately that it was a great site that was capable of producing amazing wines, so we bought the property. We launched the Springs Road Wines in December 2018 when we opened our cellar door on the property.
